Building on the success of their solid state drive (SSD) as a consumer, Plextor has now a his eyes mobile storage market. At this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the company presented its mSATA SSD first, M5M. Designed to ultrabooks, tablets, and other mobile devices with limited space, high performance and provides M5M reliability in a space one-eighth the size of a standard 2.5-inch drive. This pint-sized combines SSD controller with Marvell's 88SS9187 Toshiba NAND MLC 19nm Toggle Mode to deliver up to 540 MB/s "Monet" read and write 430 MB/s transfer rate. The M5M also supports true airspeed exclusive technologies and protect the true about Plextor as well as the standard sleep SATA device (DEVSLP) that extends the battery life of the device by reducing the power consumption of 1 mW, unit when not in use.
For this review, Plextor has sent us the PX-256M5M. This 256 GB SSD is equipped with 512 MB of onboard cache and is able to deliver sequential read 540 MB/s and 430 MB/s sequential write speeds as well as up to 77,000 and 79,000 random read random write IOPS.
