Samsung Electronics is a leader in the electronics industry for more than 30 years. Since the introduction of their first television in 1970, this Korean company has grown to become one of the leading electronics manufacturers around the world, offering everything from small appliances semiconductors. Samsung is no stranger to storage sector either. Along with an assortment of DVD and Blu-ray Disc Drive, the company offers both hard drives and flash-based memory solutions for the markets of laptops and desktops

Like many other manufacturers, Samsung has set his sights on the growing market for solid state drive (SSD). Last fall, the company introduced its 840 series SSDs. designed and built completely in-house, the SSD and SSD Pro 840 840 were fed by MDX triple-core controller of Samsung and featured a specially designed interface SATA 6 GB/s, wear levelling and garbage collection algorithms, and up to 512 MB of cache. The main difference between the two was that the SSD used Samsung 840 new 3 bit/cell MLC NAND, which is often referred to as TLC NAND. This high-density NAND was cheaper than 2-bit/cell MLC NAND found in SSD Pro 840, but there was a bit of a trade off regarding performance and resistance (program/erase cycles).

Samsung has launched the SSD 840 EVO. Unveiled at the company's annual Global Summit SSD, the disk is powered by the new Samsung MEX controller that is faster, more energy efficient, the MDX found in SSD controller 840 and 840 Pro SSD. The SSD 840 EVO is also available with up to 1 TB of 3 bit/second generation Samsung MLC NAND cell. To overcome the slow write speeds typically associated with this type of NAND flash memory, Samsung has increased the size of the cache DRAM and implemented an algorithm for accelerating innovative writing called TurboWrite, which creates a write buffer in high-performance SSD. Together with TurboWrite, the SSD 840 EVO new technology supports RAPID (Accelerated real-time Processing of data i/o) by Samsung. Using free PC memory as a cache, RAPID can push SSD performance beyond the limits of current SATA specification.

The SSD 840 EVO is available in a wide range of capacities from 120 GB to 1 TB. For this review, Samsung sent us the 750 GB version of the disc which is capable of delivering up to 540 MB/s sequential read and 520 MB/s sequential write speeds as well as random read up to 98,000 and random write IOPS 90,000.
