SanDisk is the leader in storage for more than 20 years. Founded in 1988 by Dr. Eli Harari, the company has grown from a startup in Silicon Valley for three people to the largest global supplier of solutions for flash memory storage. The company offers a wide range of products including memory cards, USB drives, SSD and its popular line of music players and video to Sansa.

With the launch of the far last spring, SanDisk made its long-awaited entry into the high-performance SSD market. Designed with enthusiasts and gamers in mind, the far was powered by the SandForce SF-processor LSI 2281 and marked a SATA 6 GB/s interface, native and TRIM support DuraClass technology. The unit also uses a custom firmware and 24nm MLC NAND Mode Toggle flash SanDisk to offer speeds up to 10 times faster than a 7,200 RPM hard drive.

The exhibition of this year's Computex, SanDisk has announced the successor to the extreme. Aptly named the II Extreme, this ultra-thin SSD is powered by a Marvell 88SS9187 controller "Monet" and features new SanDisk 19nm ABL eX2 Toggle NAND flash MLC to carry up to 550 MB/s sequential read and 510 MB/s sequential write speed of s. Extreme II also features a system of multi-level caching which includes a large DRAM cache as well as supporting nCache by SanDisk. Designed to improve random write performance, nCache uses a non-volatile cache SLC great to amass small writes at high speed and then empty them to larger sections of MLC NAND flash memory.

Extreme II is available with capacities of 120 GB, 240 and 480 GB. For this review, SanDisk sent us the 240GB version of the disc that comes with 256 MB of onboard cache and is capable of delivering up to 550 MB/s sequential read and 510 MB/s sequential write speeds and up to 95,000 78,000 random random read and write IOPS.
